Forests, Environment & Wildlife Management Department organized a plantation drive

Jorethang: To give impetus to the ground breaking “Ten Minutes to Earth” campaign conceptualized and initiated by Chief Minister Mr. Pawan Chamling, a plantation drive organized by Forests, Environment & Wildlife Management Department was carried out in Jorethang bazaar today.

The drive had the participation of SDM Jorethang Mr. Tenzing Denzongpa, NJMC Chairman Mr. Tika Gurung, NJMC Vice Chairman Ms. Pema Tamang, RO (T) Melli Mr. D.R Sharma, Additional SP (Traffic) Mr. B.B Subba, SHO Jorethang Mr. Kinga T. Bhutia, MO Jorethang CHC Dr. S.N Adhikari Former MLA Ms. Chewang.L.Bhutia alongside NJMC councillors, forest department officials, police & fire department personnel’s and senior citizens.

The plantation drive saw a total of 965 saplings of various species of flowering plants and trees being planted in the designated areas. The native species of saplings of various flowering trees and flowering plants like Eroton, Jaisara, Javakusum, Lampate and Bougainvillea were planted across Nayabazar block, hospital site, monastery premises, fire station and areas near Green Lung park. The seedling/sapling distribution booth has also been set up at Jorethang Forest Check post for the purpose of plantation of maximum number of saplings under the environment festival, ‘Sikkim Paryavaran Mahotsav.’

Later during the day, the team lead by SDM Jorethang and NJMC Chairman inspected the road and drainage status of Jorethang bazaar. It was observed during the inspection that the drainage in ward no.2 around the premises of Jorethang CHC was in a deplorable state. It was also discussed that after repeated reminders the concerned department of PHE and PWD have not complied with the directions of proper drainage and road provisions in the designated area. Expressing concern, the SDM reiterated that the concerned authorities should execute their duties in an efficient and prompt manner.  

It may be mentioned there that the annual festival of Sikkim Paryavaran Mahotsav or Environmental Festival is being observed throughout the state from 15th June and will conclude on 30th June 2016.
