Workshop on importance of usage of geo-grid and geo textile in road construction held
The workshop which was being held for the first time in the
state was organized by the Department of Roads &Bridges, Government of
Sikkim in collaboration with the Ministry of DoNER and Asian Development Bank,
New Delhi along with senior engineers from North Eastern Region.
Mr. G.M.Gurung, Minister, Roads
& Bridges graced the occasion as the chief guest and inaugurated the day
long workshop. In his inaugural address the Minister stressed on the importance
of proper and wide roads for the state of Sikkim as it is the only mode of
transport.
Ours is a landlocked state where good roads are very essential
for the economic and overall growth of the state, Sikkim focuses mainly on
tourism and good roads can thus facilitate the inflow of tourist within and
outside the state, he added.
He also requested the central government to keep in mind the
topography, terrain and other problems faced by the state like excessive
rainfall while considering the development of roads in the Himalayan region.
Mr. Gurung also felt that it’s high time the north east states
get their due importance which includes proper infrastructure like connectivity
etc.
Mrs. Mercy Epao, Director, Ministry of DoNER who also addressed
the inaugural session, informed that the workshop was important because it is
the biggest project from the central government on roads.
The workshop will focus on the problems faced by the north east
regions, she added. (IPR)
